South Korean singer BOL4, also known as, Ahn Jiyoung, performed her “Bloom” Asia Tour concert at The Theatre at Mediacorp last Saturday, delivering a 20-song setlist that showcased her musical range and engagement with local fans.
Blooming onto the Stage
The concert featured a full live band accompanying BOL4’s performance, providing a dynamic musical backdrop to the evening. Throughout the performance, the artist demonstrated linguistic adaptability by incorporating local Singlish phrases such as “hello lah“, “steady“, “shiok“, and “swee lah” during audience interactions.
The concert’s program included a comprehensive selection of tracks, beginning with songs like “Galaxy” and “You and I From The Beginning” and progressing through various musical styles. Notable performances included “Bom”, “Tell me you love me”, and “Workaholic”, each representing different emotional and musical dimensions of her repertoire.
Harmony in Participation
An interactive segment allowed audience participation, particularly during tracks like “You(=I)”, where crowd singing was encouraged. The performance also featured specific moments highlighting individual band members, including a guitar and piano solo segment that added musical depth to the concert.
BOL4 modified some song lyrics to resonate with the local audience, such as adapting “Travel” to include the phrase “love you lah“. The setlist included a mix of upbeat and introspective tracks, demonstrating BOL4’s musical versatility.
Staging a Connection
A significant moment occurred during the “Seoul” performance, where BOL4 descended from the stage to interact more closely with fans. Unlike most K-Pop concerts with a fixed encore set list, BOL4’s encore segment was audience-driven, with fans requesting specific songs, resulting in special performances of “Space” and “Chase Love Hard” tailored just for the Singapore audience.
Other popular songs in the set list included popular tracks such as “Eternal love”, “To My Youth”, culminating in the performance of “Bloom” – sharing the concert’s title – and closing with “Dandelion”.
Melodic Metamorphosis
It was also a sweet treat for the fans with the accompanying live band performance throughout the concert, offering a more textured and organic sound compared to studio recordings. A big part of BOL4’s concert involved audience engagement, with multiple opportunities for interaction through talking segments and direct communication with the fans. These moments included expressing appreciation for fan support.
Until next time, I’m sure BOL4 fans in Singapore are already counting down.
